Berlin is of course known for the history and the museums. But it also boasts an amazing culinary scene where immigration and cultural hybridity played a big role. It is the birth place of Berliner Kebab (also known as Doner Kebab) and Currywurst.

It was my first visit to Berlin and unfortunately I didn’t get to try the famous Doner Kebab. I did walk past Mustafa’s and enjoyed the smell (there were close to 70 people waiting)

However, I did discover three establishments that epitomise Berlin’s multicultural, quirky feel. Please go visit these places while you are there:

  1. Hallo Machen: A really cool Turkish/Mediterranean inspired gastropub in the Kreuzberg area. They serve drinks and mezes. If you are looking for a place to just sit and chat while sipping and munching this is the place.

2. Taste: This place is described as a Singaporean style fusion kitchen. But it is more than that. It is located in the Alt-Moabit area. The menu features mostly Bangladeshi/Indian inspired items with inspiration from Burmese, Malaysian, and Singapore. It also has a nice neighbourhood joint feel. If you like aromatic, spicy South Asian cuisine with a twist go here.

3. Yarok: A Syrian deli that servers simple, fresh food (lots of hummus, falafel, salads, grilled meat).

Yumminess at Yarok!

This is also a local joint where you will not find that many tourists but they get very busy so plan for waiting for go early.
